Stats that stood out: Steelers vs. Ravens

After a difficult loss to the Baltimore Ravens, it’s time to examine some of the statistics that stood out on Sunday. Overall, the Steelers defense is the shining star of this game, with the stat of the week.

Stat of the Week – 274

The Steelers defense has been criticized for weeks, but showed up to play against Baltimore. Despite the Ravens controlling time of possession for 32:10, Pittsburgh shut them down for their own season low, 274 total yards of offense. Baltimore’s 224 passing yards were 2 yards shy of the Steelers year low defensive output (222 against the Patriots).

Following that 274 yard stand, and holding Baltimore under 300 total yards for the game, the Steelers corrected their rushing woes, albeit against a poor rushing offense. Baltimore only yielded 50 yards on the ground for the day.

The Steelers defense also had 3 sacks on the day, after only getting 8 sacks in the previous 7 games combined.

2

Two of those sacks came from James Harrison, who moves a half sack behind the all-time regular season Steelers sack record (Jason Gildon, 77.0) and 2nd-ever with 75 or more sacks.

Artie Burns‘ first career interception was also the first pick by a Steelers defensive back this season.

6

The Steelers also had six tackles for loss, for a total of minus 21 yards.

70

Le’Veon Bell‘s total yards from scrimmage: the first time he’s been held to less than 100 this season.

9

Season-high for punts by Jordan Berry: one sailed 28 yards on his first attempt, followed up by a game-long 61 yard punt in his next attempt. (Berry has only attempted more than 5 punts once before Sunday, this season.)

103

Eli Rogers game-high receiving yards: his first 100+ yard game in his career.

13-99

Pittsburgh was penalized a game-high 13 times for 99 yards (Baltimore was penalized 10 times for 94 yards.)

Through 3 quarters, the Steelers had more yards in penalties than total offense.
