Analyzing Steelers division opponents first round picks

While the majority of us Steeler fans are clamoring over the newest Steeler, TJ Watt, there are some other draft picks we’ve been paying attention too. Particularly the picks of our division rivals.

These are rookies the Steelers will be seeing at least twice this year for many seasons to come. Some were surprises, some were no-brainers, some were players many hoped would fall to the Steelers.

Let’s take a look at who our AFC North rivals selected in the 1st round of the 2017 NFL Draft…

Cleveland Browns (pick 1, 25, 29)

Myles Garrett (EDGE) – Texas A&M

The pick that surprised nobody. Myles Garrett was the consensus top player in this year’s draft and easily the most predictable pick. The Browns may struggle with competence at times, but this was a no brainer.

Garrett will surely slide right into the starting lineup and will be asked to rush the passer from day 1. A strong pass-rush can transform a defense; Garrett could be a stepping stone to the Browns finally being a competitive team. He has the potential to be a rookie in Cleveland that doesn’t disappoint in their rookie season, something they haven’t had in awhile. Luckily the Steelers have a good offensive line that should be able to handle him.

Jabrill Peppers (DB) – Michigan

The Browns traded their 12th pick to the Houston Texans and moved back to pick 25. While Garrett was arguably the safest pick in the draft, Peppers may be one of the most polarizing.

Peppers success will ride on how he is used in Cleveland. He is viewed as a sort of jack-of-all-trades, master of none. A project player brimming with athleticism but no true position. The Browns will likely use him as either a safety or nickel cornerback, along with on special teams as a returner. How they develop him and where they play him will play greatly into whether or not he has a successful career.

David Njoku (TE) – Miami

The Browns made another trade and moved into the back-end of the 1st round.  Here they get their tight end of the future.

Njoku is a scary player with lots of match-up potential. He is one of the most athletic tight ends in the draft and has a lot of upside. For a team trying to build for the future, getting an offensive weapon like Njoku is a good selection for the Browns. This is why the Steelers have invested in players like Ryan Shazier and Sean Davis though, so they can match up with these modern tight ends.

Cincinnati Bengals (pick 9)

John Ross (WR) – Washington

The Bengals went and took a player that was seemingly mocked to them by nobody. Wide receiver was definitely a need for the Bengals though, so the pick isn’t too shocking. If the Bengals want to win with Andy Dalton, they need to give him weapons.

John Ross is a man known for his speed. He broke the combine record for the 40 -ard dash with 4.22 and surely the Steelers will become familiar with that speed soon. The big knock on Ross was his health. Along with his smaller frame, he has a history with knee and shoulder injuries. Ross could end up being a boom or bust prospect.

Baltimore Ravens (pick 15)

Marlon Humphrey (CB) – Alabama

The Ravens, unfortunately, take the player many of us SCU writers had mocked to the Steelers. Like the Steelers, the Ravens are a team that emphasizes defense so this pick makes sense. The Ravens have been rebuilding their secondary and certainly needed an upgrade at cornerback.

Marlon Humphrey is built perfectly for the AFC North, he’s a tough and aggressive player. The Ravens were wise investing in cornerback considering all of the top-tier wide receivers in the division. He’ll be tested early in his career when he goes against Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant, and it is more than likely these guys will teach the rookie a thing or two.
