Receiver Cobi Hamilton will be looking to solidify a roster spot in training camp after being re-signed to a one-year deal by the Steelers on January 26, 2017. Competing in an already crowded receiving corps, Hamilton demonstrated he too could be valuable in the Steelers’ toolbag of offensive weapons.
After being selected in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, Hamilton drifted to the Philadelphia Eagles, back to the Bengals, then to the Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers before the Steelers grabbed him on a one-year contract to add targets for Ben Roethlisberger.
Hamilton was promoted to the active roster on October 15, 2016, and on the very next day caught a 23-yard touchdown pass – his first in the NFL. Hamilton then worked in and out of the lineup and capped off his season with a game-winning touchdown reception from Landry Jones in overtime against the Cleveland Browns, finishing the game with three receptions for 54 yards.
The Steelers have followed the NFL trend for tall, lanky, athletic receivers who can stretch opposing defenses. Hamilton has competition with 11 other receivers currently on the Steelers roster heading into training camp, and may be on the bubble a bit, but could prove to be a solid #4 receiver in 2017.
