2017 Steelers Week 3 Special Teams Play of the Game: Thank you Vance

Steel City Underground will pick a play of the game from each side of the ball each week of the Steelers 2017 season. Stay tuned as we hand select the very best from the black and gold!

Over the last couple of weeks, we have had nothing but high praise for the Steelers special teams unit. Though our opinion will be more critical of this unit’s performance from this weekend’s game against the Chicago Bears, there’s still a standout play which deserves being highlighted

That play comes from recently acquired tight end Vance McDonald, who was a starter with the San Francisco 49ers but has found himself playing with special teams since arriving in Pittsburgh.

That part alone could’ve been reason enough for Vance to give up on this play. However, after a blocked field goal, he (and Jordan Berry) hustles down the field to catch up with the Bears Marcus Cooper, who stops just short of the goal line… allowing McDonald to knock the ball away and preventing Chicago from putting six points on the board.

(The Bears would eventually kick a field goal to end the half, after a confusing explanation and then review by the officiating team gave the Steelers opponent the ball on their own one-yard line.)
