2017 SCU Awards: Special Teams Player of the Year

Steel City Underground presents the 2nd annual SCU Awards. Our panel of contributors all voted on various awards for the Steelers with the player getting the most votes being the winner.

Each article will have the list of nominees with one of our contributors stating their case for why that player earned their vote and deserves the award.

Comment and let us know if you agree or disagree with our winners and nominees.

This award almost feels tedious because most should be able to figure out the winner. The Steelers special teams unit had an overall positive year, but one player stood out the most.

He may or may not have sealed multiple Steeler victories, broken some records, and made the Pro Bowl. I’ll stop wasting your time now.

Here is the nominee…

Chris Boswell

All-time franchise points record?

Check.

All-time field goals made mark?

Check.

Several game-winning field goals as time expired?

Got it.

Clutch kickers are difficult to find in the NFL, and Chris Boswell is not only a present-day special teams player of the year, he could turn out to be the Steelers greatest ever at the position in due time.

– Joe Kuzma

The fact that Boswell sealed as many games as he did with his leg makes him a special member of the Steelers’ 2017 roster. There were a few guys who made nice plays in coverage, but Boswell was money in the kicking game.

Steelers nation has loved Boswell for years, but he finally started getting the league-wide respect he deserves when he was selected to the Pro Bowl to represent the AFC. The future is bright for the Steelers young kicker.
