Plays of the Year: T.J. Watt’s first career interception… in his first career game!

Steel City Underground presents “Plays of the Year” featuring the tops runs, catches, hits and everything else in-between for the Steelers 2017 season.

When T.J. Watt was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, most fans scoffed. Watt, by virtue of his Defensive MVP brother and Houston Texan J.J. Watt, had the name recognition.

But at a position of need (outside linebacker) would the younger Watt actually be any good?

Well T.J. put those thoughts to rest early in the preseason with a set of sacks, but then had to prove himself in the regular season.

He wouldn’t wait too long.

Opening up the season on the road against the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers found themselves in a dogfight. Not so much because Cleveland was playing great football, but more or less due to the Steelers “potent” offense sputtering and stalling.

That left the Steelers defense to do the dirty work, and Watt was up to the task. Already sacking Browns QB DeShone Kizer twice in the third quarter, Watt would steal the ball away from the Browns, who were only down 11, on their most promising drive of the game.

If the sacks didn’t do it alone, the interception definitely took the wind out of Cleveland’s sails. Watt leaps into the air and picks off the pass, which held Pittsburgh’s opponent at bay en route to a 21-18 victory.
