Current Steelers standings in the team’s record books

We are living in a special era of Steelers football. We have a handful of potential future hall-of-fame players on our roster and many of them still have their best years ahead. 2016 will be a big year for the Steelers record books. Many players are close to breaking records or even just moving up in the rankings with the greats. Let’s take a look at where some of our players stand in these rankings.

Antonio Brown

Brown isn’t in a position to break any records this season, but he will certainly move up in many of the rankings. Assuming Brown gets a new contract next year though, it’s safe to assume he’ll shatter some of these in a couple years. Brown is the best receiver in football right now and shows no signs of slowing down.

Receptions

1. Hines Ward 1000
2. Heath Miller 592
3. John Stallworth 537
4. Antonio Brown 526

Brown should be able to move into the number two spot this season. He has had three straight seasons of 100+ receptions and there’s no reason to believe he won’t continue the streak. Over the past three years Brown’s reception numbers have steadily risen; assuming Ben Roethlisberger remains healthy, this trend will surely continue.

Targets

1. Hines Ward 1558
2. Heath Miller 825
3. Antonio Brown 790

Brown should be able to move up to the number two spot. Over the past three seasons his receptions have been 167, 181, and 193 and he should be able to surpass Heath. Despite all of the talent around him, Brown is still the nucleus weapon in this offense. His chemistry with Ben Roethlisberger is as good as it’s every been and Brown will continue to be the most targeted player in this offense.

Touchdowns

1. Hines Ward 85
2. John Stallworth 63
3. Lynn Swann 51
4. Heath Miller 45
5. Buddy dial 42
6. Louis Lipps 39
7. Antonio Brown 38

Brown will likely move up to either the number four spot this season. Over the past three seasons Brown hasn’t had less than 8 receptions, so regardless of who’s throwing to him Brown will likely continue this trend. Despite his short stature, Brown has repeatedly proven that he is a dangerous redzone threat and can go up and get balls.

William Gay

Gay is one of the more underrated cornerbacks in the league. He did however male a lot of noise in 2014 when he got three pick sixes in the season. Despite the feat, it may come as a surprise to some that he is tied with Rod Woodson in defensive touchdowns with the team.

Defensive touchdowns

1. Rod Woodson 5
2. William Gay 5

Gay is certainly capable of accomplishing the surpassing Rod Woodson on the list. Gay’s pick-six in 2015 is certainly his most memorable because of his famous minute long celebration, and it’s possible he will top that celebration if he breaks the record. Gay recently got a three year contract with the team, so it is almost safe to assume he will finish his career as the the all-time leader in defensive touchdowns with the Steelers.

James Harrison

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Harrison is close to breaking some Pittsburgh records. Despite his age at 38, he still plays and works out like a player half his age. Harrison has always worked his tail off for this team and certainly deserves to have his name in the history books.

Sacks

1. Jason Gildon 77
2.. James Harrison 74.5

Harrison is so close to breaking this record, and it certainly seems like he will in 2016. Harrison’s second stint with the Steelers, he’s posted sack totals of 5.5 & 5. He may not be a double-digit sack-guy like he used to be, but Harrison is still one of the best edge rushers in the league. From what we’ve seen in the preseason, as well as his various god-like offseason workout videos, Harrison is primed to shatter this record.

Forced fumbles

1. Greg Lloyd 34
2. James Harrison 31

This record seems less likely to be broken, but it’s still possible. In Harrisons prime, he posted four straight seasons of at least 5 forced fumbles. Over the last two seasons he has 2. It’s encouraging too that Harrison already has 1 forced fumble this preseason in very limited playing time. Going by the statistics, it seems less than likely he’ll break the record. However if there’s anything we know about Harrison, it’s that we should never doubt him.

Chris Boswell

Yes, despite this only being his sophomore year with the Steelers, Chris Boswell is already in the record books.

Field goal completion percentage (+10 attempts)

1. Chris Boswell 90.6%
2. Shaun Suisham 87.9%

I was certainly surprised to see Boswell as the leader in this category. His attempt numbers stand out though. Boswell’s number of attempts is 32 compared to Suisham’s 141. The real test for Boswell will be if he can remain consistent over his career and maintain this percentage. Regardless, this feat is still impressive for the young kicker. It’s hard to believe we may have found a kicker better than Shaun Suisham and Jeff Reed.
