Yes… there were some positives from Sunday’s game

Many of us needed a cool off period, in order to adjust and gain perspective after a terrible loss. (Otherwise, all you would hear is our frustration with this game!)

Now that we have hit our 24-hour cooling off period, let’s take a look at some positives from the Steelers at Philadelphia game on Sunday.

Yes: positives.

First, the weather was nice. (See it didn’t take long to find one).

Next, I saw many social media Tweets that Philadelphia’s Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, boasts some of the best game day snack bar food in the country (and yes, the Philly Cheese Steaks are awesome).

I’m on a roll now…

The Steelers won the coin toss and chose to keep the ball.

Positive all the way… until after the coin toss.

Yet there were other decent takeaways from this game.

First, Antonio Brown was the focus of the receiver corps. once again, with 12 receptions for 140 yards receiving to add to his season stat sheet.

Is that it?

Okay, now the reality: it’s difficult to find anything beyond that.

It was an ugly game. Not just for fans, but for everyone. I think Ben stated it the best is his postgame presser:

“Uh, we stunk.  Yeah, we all stunk.”

There is no one other than Coach Tomlin who understands how truly bad this game was:

“It starts with me. They out-coached us; they out-played us. They were better fundamentally; tackling and so forth.”

It was played as if there was no defensive gameplan going in, on how to stop Rookie QB Wentz (who was already 2-0 coming into the game) but let’s get back to more of the positive.

Injuries

We had some key injuries during the game, but some may be minor.

Ian Rapoport reported, that LB Jarvis Jones sprained his ankle but it was very minor, and that is the report coming out of the Steelers locker room as well.

Tomlin also noted in his Tuesday press conference that Lawrence Timmons is also okay with what was described as a “puncture wound”. (Timmons was taken to the hospital for a shin injury, but was walking around post game in the locker room.)

Unfortunately, Ramon Foster, Eli Rogers and Ryan Shazier were all described as “very questionable” today by Tomlin.

Robert Golden, who is nursing a hamstring injury will be further evaluated.

Was it only a bad day?

The Steelers were getting demolished by the opposing team. The Eagles front seven, led by defensive tackle Pro Bowler Fletcher Cox, pushed the pocket all game to stop the Steelers running game, while sacking Big Ben four times.

The backups never took the field (even with a 30 point lead by Philly) though any were calling for it, if for nothing else to avoid even more injuries. Roethlisberger mentioend:

“We don’t quit. I don’t quit.

That’s not the Steeler way.

That’s not my way.”

Honestly, at that point the starters were left in to try and find some kind of rhythm on offense, before our next game. The first 2 games of the season were so impressive, it’s hard to realize every team has a bad day.

It’s not a bad team, it’s a bad day.

Fans need to recognize the difference.

The last time this kind of game took place, it was against the Eagles: it was 2008, Ben was sacked 7 times, and he considered retiring (if you believe the rumors circulating at that time).

The result?

Pittsburgh ended up winning the Super Bowl.

Looking forward to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Steelers are going to have to find away to get WR Sammie Coates more involved, as he has become the Martavis Bryant fill-in/deep threat.

They must figure out why WR Markus Wheaton came back from injury with 3 dropped passes, when he has shown he can make those plays.

We should all celebrate the return of RB Le’Veon Bell who adds a whole new dimension to the ground and air game.

Kansas City has one of the top defenses in the league, but their offense is mediocre at best, and that is where we will need to focus. The defense has to rebound to dominant the AFC as we know we can, which is the most positive takeaway from this game:

It was a loss to an NFC opponent, not an AFC opponent.

A bad game, and a loss of this manner, at this time, to a non-conference team could end up factoring in big at the end of the season.

With that disaster out of the way, it’s all positive moving forward.
