Tomlin postgame: Steelers coach has brief afterthoughts of Sunday’s loss

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held a press conference immediately following the Steelers game. Here’s a breakdown of of the coach’s comments about their performance.

Opening Statement

Disappointing, but you have to give Denver credit. They had a great performance. We did not and we accept responsibility for that. It was the turnover ratio, we didn’t do a good job of taking care of the ball and we also didn’t do a good job of getting the football. I just finished telling the team that you have to look at it from that perspective.

It’s a dual responsibility, we didn’t take care of the ball well enough and we didn’t balance that out by getting the ball. When you’re minus whatever we were in the game, it’s going to be tough to win. We’ve got some work to do, we’ll do it, we’ll absorb this and whatever comes with it and get back to work tomorrow.

We had several guys that went down at different points with injury, they were all able to come back in. [Linebacker] T.J. Watt was able to come back in with a wrist injury, [Tight End] Vance McDonald came back in and I think [Linebacker] Bud Dupree came back in as well. We’ll have more on the injury front as we push into next week.

On TE Xavier Grimble’s fumble out of the end zone

I don’t take any credit away from guys that are competing and plays that people make, but I coach Xavier and I’m focused on the ball security element of it.

On if he saw something in the Denver Broncos field goal coverage or wanted to give his team a spark before halftime that led him to call for a fake field goal

Both.

On why the Broncos were able to run the effectively against them tonight

Again, I’m not displeased with anything in terms of how the game unfolded other than the turnover ratio. Some of that minutia we’ll look at when we watch the video.

On if today was the case of the offense stopping themselves

No, I’m not taking credit away from those guys, they got the football and you have to give them credit for that and that’s why I said it when I opened the press conference.
