The “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” from the Steelers’ white knuckle win against the Cowboys

Following every Pittsburgh Steelers game, Travis Newton takes a no-holds-barred, unabashed look at what went well, not so good and just plain ugly. Here is this week’s edition of the “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”

The Good

CeeDee Lamb Fumble

Cowboys Ball: 2nd Quarter 1:03 – 1st-and-15 DAL 20

More often than not, when the Steelers offense is struggling to put together drives, it takes a big play by the defense to create a short field. That is exactly what happened when Cam Sutton instinctively wound up and punched the ball out of the hands of CeeDee Lamb who had secured the Catch for 14 yards.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was in the right place at the right time to scoop up the ball and give Pittsburgh prime field position at the Dallas 39 yard line. The turnover led to a field goal for the Steelers which not only shortened the lead but also gave them some momentum to start the second half.

The Bad

CeeDee Lamb Touchdown Reception

Cowboys Ball: 2nd Quarter 7:52 – 3rd-and-7 PIT 20

First time starting Quarterback Garrett Gilbert immediately recognized a mismatch on this 3rd down play to link up with CeeDee lamb to score the first touchdown of the day for either team.

Typical edge rusher, T.J. Watt found himself in pass coverage against one of the speediest receivers out of last year’s draft class. Lamb used his speed to blow past Watt and with no coverage help over the top, made the wide-open catch.

The Ugly

Trick Punt Return

Steelers Ball: 2nd Quarter 6:23 – 4th-and-5 PIT 26

A 62-yard punt by Jordan Berry was all but normal, until returner Cedrick Wilson Jr. made the catch, baited the Steelers punt coverage unit, and then hurled a backward pass across the width of the field to C.J. Goodwin.

Goodwin caught the lateral and looked up to an open path to the endzone. He took the return 83 yards up the sideline until he was tripped up on the Steelers 11 yard line. An illegal block brought the return back to the 21-yard line but still resulted in points for Dallas as a field goal put them ahead 13-0.
