Plays of the Year: Nick Herbig beats block for first career sack

Steel City Underground presents “Plays of the Year” featuring the top runs, catches, hits and everything else in-between from the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 season.

In Week 7 of the 2023 NFL regular season, the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to hand the Los Angeles Rams a loss to move to 4-2 on the season. Head coach Mike Tomlin extended his win streak as a coach coming off of a bye week, and the Steelers saw great effort from young players, including rookie linebacker Nick Herbig. It was a full-team win that Steelers fans should be excited about.

In the second quarter of the game, on 1st & 10 from the 50, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford took the snap from the shotgun. Herbig, in the right outside linebacker position in place of Alex Highsmith, was able to get off the block quick and hook in order to grab a blind side sack; it was the first of his young NFL career.

Herbig has been learning behind Highsmith and T.J. Watt in the Steelers lineup and displayed great technique in getting position on the left tackle in order to make a big play.

On limited snaps, Herbig’s sack against the Rams was undoubtedly not his last. He would add two more throughout the season as he became a nice depth player in his rookie season.
