The Steelers Are NOT Signing Tim Tebow (Or Any Other QB!)

Stop the insanity: the Steelers aren’t signing another quarterback.

Ben Roethlisberger will be out for 1-2 weeks. With a bye week after this week’s upcoming Cleveland game, that puts Ben on pace to play in the very next game against Seattle. With such a short window, it would be extremely unlikely that Pittsburgh pick up another quarterback. There’s not enough time for another QB to learn a system, when you consider one signed in training camp (Michael Vick) is still learning the system.

But let’s consider some of the dumb rumors floating around:

Tim Tebow

Let’s face it: Tebow’s NFL career is over. After a great winning streak in Denver (including a heartbreaker for Steelers fans) Tebow has fallen off the face of the planet. Rex Ryan, Bill Bellichek and Chip Kelly all gave Tim a chance, and while I liked Tebow’s energy, no coach is willing to adapt their playbook to fit a college run-first style quarterback, who cannot throw an accurate pass at the NFL level.

Colin Kaepernick

Ditto for the troubled 49ers QB. The read-option offense has been figured out by NFL defenses, and Kaepernick has a huge, starting QB price tag that would come with his acquisition (forget the fact that the trade deadline has passed.) Even if a trade were still possible at this point in the season, the Steelers could not fit him under the cap.

Robert Griffin III

And let’s say ditto again: Griffin is expensive, cannot be traded for and is a fragile player with a bad injury history.

Other Free Agents

The only free agents remaining are players who have been released from other clubs, such as Ryan Mallett, who are obviously not on an NFL roster for a reason. If you thought Michael Vick was a gamble, who else is out there worth a shot… for maybe one week with the team?

Let’s face it: Landry Jones it the backup and will likely be the fill-in for the foreseeable future. Also, do not expect Tyler Murphy to be called up, as the team would have to move someone off of the 53-man roster to make such a move. Worst case scenario, if Ben isn’t available, he will fit the inactive 3rd QB role that was regularly occupied by Jones, and was occupied by Vick last Sunday.
