Mike Tomlin reviews Steelers preseason loss to the Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held a postgame press conference following Thursday’s preseason game in Green Bay. Here’s a look at the coach’s comments about the the game.

On the game as a whole

You know, not enough fundamental things in all three phases for a winning performance. You don’t expect perfection this time of year, but we fell short in a lot of areas tonight. We turned the ball over; that is never good – home or away – in any circumstance.

We didn’t do a good enough job of taking care of the football. We lost leverage too much in coverage, particularly on possession downs. You can’t do that. Leverage is a big element of football. I thought we didn’t do a good enough job there.

I didn’t think we did a good enough job of pressuring and containing the QB. I thought that was significant early on possession downs. And when you’re in a hostile environment on the road, particularly when you are turning the ball over and you’re not finding rhythm, you’ve got to win those possession downs and we didn’t do enough there.

I thought the punting wasn’t consistent enough.

There’s enough issues in all three phases for us to address. Like I just told the team in there, I understand this process is a learning one, but, boy, we’ve got a lot to learn from that video.

And we will.

How we respond to this performance is probably more important than the performance itself. So we will learn a lot about ourselves in the upcoming days in terms of acknowledging what we did and taking the proper steps to rectify some of those things.

On injuries during the game

Not a lot to report from the injury front. Some guys are being evaluated, but there’s nothing significant to speak of. I think Chuks’ [Chukwuma Okorafor] shoulder is being evaluated at tackle. The rest of it is just bumps and bruises associated with play.

On quarterback Mason Rudolph’s play

I just thought his demeanor and stuff was good. We just didn’t play as well and he’s not alone in terms of that. I just thought we were a little tentative offensively and didn’t make enough plays early going.

On running the ball well early in the game

Certainly, but I’m not looking to take anything out of it. I’m looking to address our issues. Our run game was solid, but we’ve got enough to focus our attentions on.

On wide receiver James Washington’s play and moving up to the next level

We’ll see how it goes. He didn’t do anything in this stadium that we hadn’t seen on the practice fields of Latrobe, so that’s a good sign.

On quarterback Joshua Dobbs’ interception

I thought just like Mason [Rudolph], his demeanor and communication and so forth was throughout. You would just like to have those plays back, but the deal is, you don’t get those plays back. And so, hopefully there’s a learning process there for all of us.

On running back James Conner’s performance

I thought he represented himself in a similar way he has throughout this process, whether it is on the practice field of Latrobe or last week. I’ve been pleased with the progress he’s making and it just needs to continue.
