Watch: Steelers’ Kenneth Gainwell makes huge splash play

Following every NFL game in 2025, Steel City Underground parses the best plays from the Pittsburgh Steelers to highlight for Steelers Nation fans to rewatch, complete with what led up to the big play(s).

The Steelers have gotten a big boost on offense after bringing running back Kenneth Gainwell to Pittsburgh. Versatile, and dubbed to have the best hands on the team by head coach Mike Tomlin, Gainwell has given the team a dual-threat weapon in the run game and passing game. In Week 16 of the 2025 NFL regular season, Gainwell made arguably the biggest splash play the Steelers offense has made all year.

Tied a 3-3 in the second quarter of Sunday afternoon’s game, Pittsburgh’s offense stalled and the Steelers were forced to punt the ball away three possessions in a row. The Lions were able to score, going ahead 10-3, but then Aaron Rodgers found more magic in Motown

The Steelers offense went on an 11-play drive that ate up 80 yards and tied the game ahead of the halftime break.

On 2nd & 10 at the DET 45, Rodgers had Gainwell motion out wide to the right, took the snap from shotgun, and let loose a deep pass off of his back foot. Gainwell, who was in one-on-one coverage with Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone, adjusted as he went to the ground, securing the catch while on his side and back. Untouched after possessing the ball, Gainwell smartly got up and carried the ball into the end zone for the touchdown.

Anzalone drew a pass interference penalty for interference before the catch.

Due to the chaotic, nearly unbelievable catch, recovery, and scamper into the end zone, the play was reviewed. Upon review, it was clear that Gainwell had not only maintained control of the ball but had not been “downed” by the Lions defender.

The touchdown stood. The penalty was declined. A successful Chris Boswell PAT gave the Steelers, who were to receive first in the second half, fantastic momentum at the halftime break.

In the 29-24 victory, Gainwell gained 50 yards on 9 carries and 78 yards on five receptions, plus the touchdown. Rodgers completed 27-of-41 passes for 266 yards and 1 TD.
